Story
Where Every Day Feels Like Sunday”
“The Love Behind Kountry Cookin’”
Hello, my name is Homer Fulton, Jr., and I am the proud proprietor of Kountry Cookin’ Soul Food Restaurant, right here in the heart of Whitehaven.
Before I tell you about the birth of Kountry Cookin’, let me share a little about myself. I’ve always been what I call a visionary entrepreneur—if I can believe it, I can achieve it. I’m a man of faith, raised by a strong single mother who brought up ten children with nothing but prayer, grit, and the grace of God. You can say that’s where I got my fortitude from.
As a teenager, I was always finding ways to make a dollar—cutting grass, selling bottles and copper, working at the grocery store and Fred’s Dollar Store, even chopping and picking cotton. I learned early that hard work and faith go hand in hand.
Every summer, when school let out, my mother would send my siblings and me down to the country to stay with our grandmother, my father’s mother. That’s where I was introduced to real soul food, the kind that touched your spirit before it hit your stomach. I can still taste that fried chicken, those hot biscuits, and her blueberry pies fresh from the oven. Don’t get me wrong—my mother could throw down too—but there was something special about Grandma’s cooking. Maybe it was because she grew her food straight from the earth, natural and pure, with love in every dish.
That’s where the dream of Kountry Cookin’ was born. I wanted to bring that same flavor, that same feeling, back to life. I wish Grandma could be in the kitchen today, but she’s no longer with us—so I make sure my cooks come as close to her style as possible. Every meal we serve carries a little piece of her spirit.
When I first looked around Whitehaven, I realized there wasn’t a place serving the kind of breakfast or soul food I grew up on—made with care, seasoned with love, and served with genuine hospitality. In June 2010, I opened Kountry Cookin’ Soul Food Restaurant to share my grandmother’s legacy with the community that raised me.
It’s been a blessing ever since. I truly believe my grandmother, Ms. Lillie Mae Killings, is proud of me. She couldn’t always afford new clothes or shoes for us, but she made sure we never missed a home-cooked meal. The food she made filled more than our stomachs—it filled our souls.
That’s what Kountry Cookin’ stands for: faith, family, hard work, and good food made from the heart.
Every plate we serve is a thank-you to her, a reminder of the love she poured into her kitchen, and the love we pour into ours.
So come on by and pull up a chair at Kountry Cookin’ Soul Food Restaurant
Be blessed!
